Too fast it seems, our twelve days in the bush come to an end. We went on an early morning game drive and saw, well, mostly smelled, a dead elephant. Mafuka said it had died of natural causes since it hadn't been devoured and even the vultures were having a time breaking through the now petrified skin. It reeked from a quarter mile away, so we went on a ways before having our last 'tea time' out in the bush.
Jan and I rode with the luggage in one of the safari vehicles to the airstrip... one final yeehaw! Mafuka's vehicle, ahead of us, had a flat tire, which he and our fellow travelers had changed by the time we caught up... you truly have to be a jack of all trades out here in the bush. The flat tire was only a problem because Mafuka was supposed to be at the airstrip in time to clear the 'runway' of wild animals before the planes that were going to fly us out landed. But all went well, and we flew in two small planes to Victoria Falls and our hotel where we would spend the next two days.
Victoria Falls is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, and it's not hard to see why. It's rather magnificent indeed! The area by the falls has it's own rain forest-like environment in this sometimes arid land. We spent a few hours walking the trails along the falls. Victoria Falls is the same height as Niagra Falls and 1 1/2 times the width, and produces 3 times as much water. September is a 'low water' month, but still it was impressive.
From Wikipedia...
The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders (note that the 'i' is silent), is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls are the largest in the world.
We had dinner at our hotel following the visit to the falls. I had warthog for dinner. I know, not especially noteworthy, but I just wanted to say that!
Beautiful... the falls too...
