Somewhere In Africa
After two long, overnight flights, Denver to London, and then London to Johannesburg, South Africa, we arrived in Johannesburg late morning on 9 September. We freshened up and called my friend, Rosemary, to arrange a visit. We forewent the Soweto option offered by OAT in the interest of meeting with Rosemary... others who did the Soweto tour were rather disappointed in that they had little time to interact or actually walk along famed Vilakazi Street (the only street in the world that can boast being the homes of two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela). It's never a bad choice to visit with local acquaintances, we've found.
Rosemary and I met in the early days of Internet chat and became good chat buddies, of course never dreaming that we'd actually get to meet in person. Rosemary and her son, Lloyd, came to our hotel and we had a lovely visit and a meal together, high tea, if you will. Almost to the person, we've found the people I've met online and taken a liking to have been just as interesting and fun to know in person. Rosemary, and Lloyd, were no exception. We exchanged small gifts but Rosemary's gift was particularly special... a locally crafted wall hanging depicting the day to day lives of indigenous South Africans. Our trip was off to a great start and we hadn't even caught up on our sleep yet.
A brief London layover, just enough time to put our feet up for a few hours...

Rosemary and Lloyd...
Rosemary gave us a wall hanging which we really treasure, our first taste of this continent and it's diverse cultures...
